Yesterday’s strikes came a day after the Kandal Provincial Court delayed questioning eight of the fired workers over charges that they incited an
illegal strike in June.
Union member Un Bunkea, one of the sacked workers whom the Ang Snuol district factory is suing for $60,000 in compensation, said yesterday that the eight fired union members appeared at the court on time but were told that their questioning had been suspended.
“I do not know when we will be summonsed again, but the workers are continuing their strike to demand that the factory drop the case and that all 16 people who were sacked return,” he said.
The workers, who began striking in front of the garment factory on Monday, say that they will continue until the company accepts their demands.
Tae Young factory administrative manager Preab Len told the Post on Monday that the factory cannot allow the workers to return.
Meanwhile, about 1,000 workers in Phnom Penh’s Por Sen Chey district continued to burn tyres in front of the Cambo Kotop Ltd factory as part of a more than week-long protest to demand better working conditions.
Worker representative Vann Vanna said yesterday that workers have burned more than 100 tyres in front of the factory’s gate.
Their demonstration has prevented products from entering and leaving the factory, she said, and added that the workers will continue the protest until their demands are met.
“We have only eight requests for the factory,” she said. “Why do they not resolve this for us?”
The workers have asked for a minimum wage of $66 to $75 per month.
They are also asking for attendance bonuses and money for transportation, lunch and health bonuses.
Cambo Kotop factory officials could not be reached for comment yesterday.
